Microsoft releases KB5040427 update to fix bugs and make significant changes to Copilot in Windows 10

Copilot being added to Windows 10 was something of a surprise for an operating system that is very much breathing its last. And more than just bringing the AI-powered assistant to Windows 10, Microsoft is continuing to update it with big changes.

The release of the KB5040427 update for Windows 10 this Patch Tuesday is a good example. Microsoft has used this update to fix lots of OS bugs -- including an infuriating taskbar niggle – and also tweaked Copilot to make it function like an app.

Resurrecting Internet Explorer -- the nasty threat impacting potentially millions of Windows 10 and 11 users

Check Point Research (CPR) has identified a critical zero-day spoofing attack exploiting Microsoft Internet Explorer on modern Windows 10/11 systems, despite the browser's retirement.

Identified as CVE-2024-38112, this vulnerability allows attackers to execute remote code by tricking users into opening malicious Internet Shortcut (.url) files. This attack method has been active for over a year and could potentially impact millions.

What happens if you set every Windows 10 registry key to zero? Let's find out...

The Windows Registry is obviously a critical component of the Windows operating system, serving as a hierarchical database that stores low-level settings for the OS and applications. It contains configurations for system hardware, installed software, user preferences, and the OS itself.

You can add new functionality to Windows and change how existing features work by creating new registry keys or altering existing ones, typically changing their binary values from 0 to 1 or vice versa. But have you ever wondered what would happen to Windows if -- in a moment of madness -- you set every registry key to 0? Basically setting them to ‘disabled’ or ‘off'?

0patch will keep Windows 10 secure for at least five more years after Microsoft abandons it

October 2025 marks a significant turning point for many Windows users. As Windows 10 receives its last free security updates from Microsoft, the only "free" way to keep Windows secure will be to take the plunge and upgrade to Windows 11. Despite Microsoft's best efforts, many users either don’t want to -- or can’t -- do this. Issues range from a preference for the familiar Windows 10 interface to the more serious matter of hardware incompatibility.

Canalys estimates that 240 million computers worldwide don’t meet Windows 11’s hardware requirements, lacking TPM 2.0, a supported CPU, 4GB RAM, UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability, or a supported GPU. Leaving a Windows 10 computer unpatched after October 2025 will likely open it up to critical vulnerabilities within the first month, but there are solutions available to keep Windows 10 running securely after end-of-life arrives.

Microsoft's KB5039299 update is a pretty boring bug fix for Windows 10

Windows 10 laptop

Windows 10 continues to live on, although it is now a ripe old age. Despite the looming end-of-life for the operating system, Microsoft has surprised users by continuing to add new features and options.

This is not the case with the new KB5039299 update, however. This is a non-security update which, Microsoft proclaims, "includes quality improvements". This is a cute way of saying it's a boring bug fixer, but if you've been affected by those bugs, it's an important update.

Microsoft launches Windows 11 24H2 for Copilot+ PCs, creating a confused multi-tier system of Windows users

Copilot key

With the official launch of Copilot+ PCs, Microsoft has also unleashed Windows 11 24H2. This most recent update to Windows 11 has been a long time in the works, and there have been numerous preview builds available.

What is interesting is the way in which this launch is taking place. Copilot+ PC are now available with Windows 11 24H2 pre-installed, and it is also available to Insiders. The fact that systems have this version of the operating system installed means that development is complete (well, as complete as such work ever is), but the launch is dividing the Windows userbase into haves and have-nots -- in more ways than one.

Windows 10 may be in its death throes, but Microsoft has reopened beta testing

Embossed Windows 10 logo

In something of an odd twist, Microsoft has announced that there will soon be a new beta version of Windows 10. Yes, Windows 10, not Windows 11.

There is a little over a year until Microsoft brings Windows 10 to end of service, meaning it will receive no more updates of any description. Despite this looming deadline, the reopening of the Windows 10 beta channel means that the first beta build of the operating system in three years is just weeks away. So what is going on?

Windows 10's File Explorer is hidden in Windows 11 and you can use it immediately with this simple trick

The transition from Windows 10 to Windows 11 brought several changes and enhancements to the File Explorer, aiming to streamline navigation and improve user experience. The most notable update in Windows 11 is the redesigned user interface, which adopts a cleaner, more minimalist look consistent with the overall aesthetic of the operating system.

The changes include a simplified toolbar, which replaces the traditional ribbon menu seen in Windows 10. The new command bar is less cluttered and provides quick access to commonly used functions like cut, copy, paste, rename, and share.
